LinuxConsole : an original linux disto

E-mail Print PDF

LinuxConsole, a Linux distibution for the desktop.

This project started in 2002, first t o make a liveCD with 3D drivers and free games, then becomes an original linux distribution (doesnt' depend of other distros). LinuxConsole is an original ditro, it aims to be innovative. It was the first linux distro to have 3D enabled on liveCD, the a great work was done to install it safely from Windows (95 to vista), and now the jukebox makes customized livecd/liveusb very easy to build.

Why using LinuxConsole ?

  • If you have few disk space (1Gb of squasfs modules takes 3Gb of data)
  • If you want to play games, quickly
  • If you have few memory
  • If you want to install LinuxConsole on Windows, in a very secure mode

The goals :

Using a computer like a console game

  • Very easy to use
You start, you have nothing to configure, then you play !
  • Fast boot
LinuxConsole has been optimized to boot quickly (especialy with the fastlc boot option, that makes boot in 10 seconds)
  • Very good hardware detection
You doesn't need to setup drivers for video, network or sound, they are loaded automaticaly

Works on old computers

  • Lightweight default window manager

LinuxConsole has icewm as default window manager, which is fast and uses few memory
  • Customized ISOs
You can build your own ISOs, choosing for example the 2.4 kernel and fluxbox as default window manager, to use LinuxConsole with only 32Mb RAM

Original : Does not depend of other disro (buildt from scratch)

  • LinuxConsole is buildt from scratch
A toolchain is available every year, to build packages, then modules
  • Binary or source
Modules (binary) are available on repository, but it is easy to build sofware from source (from tar archive, or desc debian file), the LFS and devtools modules are needed for this. See Developper documentaion for more details

You can install it from Windows, without modifying partitions or MBR

  • Installation is very secure
LinuxConsole will write on mbr ot partition table only if the hard disk is empty, when using the nice tool to install on windows, the MBR is not modified (LinuxConsole is simply added at Windows boot list)
